Grande Terre is the main island of New Caledonia It is mountainious and has rich terrain of boxite. It is also where the capital, Noumea, is located. Noumea has a strong French influence, Parisian fashon, French cuisine and European elegance. New Caledonia is a mix of French and Melanesian cultures.
The outer islands, Loyalty Islands, to the east of Grande Terre, Ouvea, Lifu and Mare and Ile des Pins to the south are real treasures for sailing, swimming and enjoying traditional culture.
The indigenous people of New Caledonia want to rename their lands as Kanak.
Sadly, problems between the Kanaks and French have caused trouble recently. That situation effected tourism, a considerable addition to the local economy.
The marine life is rich and spectacular, coral reefs, fish, marine parks, secound largest in the world after Australian Great Barrier Reef.
Loyalty Islands have amazingly white, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
New Caledonia is a treasure of the South Pacific.
